Press Release

The National University of Singapore’s (NUS) Faculty of Law has appointed a new Advisory Board and leading the new Advisory Board as Chairman is Professor Tommy Koh, Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Institute of Policy Studies.

A former Dean at the Faculty of Law of the University of Singapore from 1971 to 1974, Professor Koh was also formerly Singapore’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Singapore’s Ambassador to the United States of America, and our country’s Chief Negotiator for the US-Singapore Free Trade Agreement.

The newly appointed Advisory Board replaces a Steering Committee for the NUS Faculty of Law which was established in 2001 to advise the Dean of Law and the NUS Vice Chancellor, and to act as a liaison between NUS and the legal profession.

The terms of reference of the Advisory Board are similar to those for the Steering Committee. Also chaired by Professor Tommy Koh, this Steering Committee comprised prominent figures in the local legal landscape, namely Chief Justice of Singapore Chan Sek Keong (Judiciary, Supreme Court of Singapore); Justice Andrew Ang (Judiciary, Supreme Court of Singapore); Justice VK Rajah (Judiciary, Supreme Court of Singapore); Dr Philip Pillai (Shook Lin & Bok); Mr Davinder Singh, Senior Counsel (Drew & Napier); Mr K Shanmugam, Senior Counsel (Allen & Gledhill); and Prof Tan Cheng Han, Senior Counsel (NUS).

Said Professor Tommy Koh, Ambassador-at-Large, "The Faculty of Law has made great strides since its establishment in 1956. The NUS law school is today regarded as one of the best in Asia. Our ambition is to be recognised as one of the best law schools in the world. While mindful of our duty to provide an outstanding education for lawyers in Singapore, we also wish to attract to the school talented students, teachers and researchers from the region and the world. The Advisory Board will help the school to achieve its ambition and to maintain a close relationship with its stakeholders in Singapore."

Professor Tan Cheng Han, Senior Counsel and Dean of the Faculty of Law commented, "I am delighted to have such a distinguished group of legal professionals on the NUS law school's Advisory Board. As a professional school, it is essential that the Faculty of Law continues to engage, and obtain advice from the profession. Only then can the law school ensure that her programmes and courses remain relevant and up to date. I look forward to the views of the members of the Advisory Board and am grateful to them for consenting to assist the law school."

Other prominent members of the Advisory Board include President of the Law Society of Singapore and Senior Counsel Mr Philip Jeyaretnam, Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Senior Counsel Ms Indranee Rajah and Member of Parliament and Senior Counsel Mr K Shanmugam. The full list of the NUS Faculty of Law Advisory Board can be found in Annex 1.

The Faculty of Law also thanked the outgoing members of the Steering Committee, Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong, Justice VK Rajah, and Senior Counsel Mr Davinder Singh for their valuable contributions to the law school over the last 5 years.
