One-Stop Centre To License Music By COMPASS

The Composers and Authors Society of Singapore (COMPASS) has set up a one-stop centre to license music works for digital distribution.

The move is another move to reduce the spread of illegal music downloads. The new one-stop centre, up since beginning of 2006, allows the company to just apply for a single licence instead of to several different msic publishers.

To further combat illegal music downloads, COMPASS plans to introduce two new technologies to identify illegal music websites:-

(a) One technology uses a webcrawler to crawl through the Internet to search for sites that have illegal musical works; and

(b) The other technology uses fingerprinting to identify the type of music that has been downloaded, and checks if the musical works have the appropriate copyright licences.
