Creative Technology Awarded Zen Patent in USA

Creative's patent, awarded on 9th Aug 2005 (Singapore's National Day) credits the company with inventing an 'automatic hierarchical' system, which allows users to dig through a digital library of songs by following an on-screen menu with three levels of categories and subcategories.

The system was first used in the Creative Nomad Jukebox that went on sale in the United States in September 2000.

The patent may later enable Creative to collect royalties from competing makers of MP3 players who use the technology. The technology, Creative alleges, is used in Apple iPods and iPod minis.
